I saw firsthand where I saw the challenges of internal strife and the complex narratives that commonly unfold within familial settings.
As a child, I observed my father, and later my first husband, both deeply engrossed in their businesses, striving to provide for their families and their employees at the cost of their emotional presence and availability.
This dilemma of prioritising provision over personal connection was a recurring theme, not just in my family but among many family business owners and corporate executives with whom I worked, including the experiences now echoed in my sons.
I saw over and over, that the older generations did not know how to bring in the younger generation; they didn’t know how to talk about the emotional landscape of investment decisions, and unfortunately, the momentum, pride, and passion of our family heritage got diluted.
Turns out, our family isn’t alone, 84% of family offices don’t make it to the 3rd generation.
The longing for a deeper family connection beyond business, coupled with the struggle to be recognised as a competent woman, steered me towards corporate. However, the eerily familiar challenges persisted, reinforcing my resolve to do business differently.
